Festive Round-up

I hope all our readers had a happy Christmas.  I did lots of cooking!  Indeed I do not have one photo of me from Christmas Day where I am not wearing a red spotty pinny.  Under it I wore a Mango gold sequin square jumper I bought when I was heavily pg, with Zara star jeans and my Sam Edelman rose Adenas (black in a size 5 here for £35!!)

Boxing Day and more family and cooking.  I wore a Zara black shirt with gold buttons, Zara gold and black brocade trousers, Kenneth Jay Lane coin bracelet, Whistles gold jewelled necklace and no shoes (luckily I was indoors – I have yet to find shoes to go with the trousers)

We are a gift giving family and thoroughly enjoyed spoiling each other.  I was lucky to unwrap this DvF Atomic cashmere scarf and a Marc by Marc Jacobs grey handbag I have been coveting (see final photo)

I am not a fan of the sales (I like discounts, just not jumble sales)  I only shop them on line usually.  I did need a new pair of jeans though so braved the madness for an hour’s dash to Selfridges yesterday.  None of their premium brand denim is in the sale of course apart from some of the more zany printed jeans (as far as I could see anyway)  I need some though so I tried about 30 pairs on from Paige, J Brand, MiH, Goldsign, Rag & Bone, James Jeans and Hudson while La Bambina slept and my big girl played on her new DS.  I ended up with the Hudson Nicos which I love and will blog soon.  I am now avidly checking on line for black or grey J Brand Marias in the sale.  Let me know if you spot any, please!  Anyway, for the shopping and then dinner I wore black Nudie jeans, old grey Cos cashmere tshirt, Oasis Carrie wedges, grey Zara coat, new DvF scarf and new Marc by Marc Jacobs bag.

Christmas Eve!

In Italy everyone has an onomastico where you celebrate your name day (trusting you’re named after a saint) I like to add a touch of self celebration to the general air of festivity on 24th December. This usually takes the form of prosecco and macaroons and occasionally the opening of a present or two (I repeat the festivities on New Year’s Eve too)

I spent the morning running about doing all the things I thought I had days left to do.  I also stopped to have my fringe trimmed and spotted the opportunity for a quick outfit shot.

Later we went out for drinks with our close friends and god kids then home for baccalà and our Feast of 7 Fishes. I have been preparing our salted cod for three days and it is going to take some serious work from the White Company Winter range of candles and room scenters to get rid of the smell!

I’m wearing (under my pinny) Diesel furry waistcoat, black Nudie skinnies, French Connection star tshirt, black suede Oasis Carrie wedges and Per Una (yes, you read that correctly) faux fur coat. What a lot of faux fur! I am carrying Marc by Marc Jacobs black Francesca.

I am off to enjoy the festivities and open some pressies.  Merry Christmas, Buon Natale and Happy Holidays everyone.

It’s Party Time!

I am a big convert to Christmas and this year I am throwing myself wholeheartedly into the festivities.

Thursday I went out for drinks with two of my sisters.  It was nice to see so many people dressed up and off into town for their Christmas nights out – there were lots of sequins which is always a good thing.   I wore black Zara waxed skinnies, Oasis Carrie wedges, new French Connection Galaxy gold top (it is lovely but made my armpits sore?!), black leather lapel Zara jacket, old black Zara shearling wrap, Oasis clutch. I came home minus the wrap, clutch and coat. The perils of being a big sister (to be clear, one of my sisters pilfered them – not a random thief!) I didn’t take photos until after a glass or two of wine and they are rather blurry so here is a photo of the top.

Yesterday we threw a Christmas party for my beautiful girl and 12 of her school mates. It was very loud and very happy.  I wore the Zara sequin harems again with an old black Topshop cotton jumper and Accessorize gold studded leopard pendant.

I was happy to buy most of the food but I did make reindeer biscuits for the kids and ricciatelli for the grown ups (the mince pies are all homemade by Waitrose)

Today we are visiting friends and family and I am wearing French Connection star tshirt, Diesel faux fur W-Eve sleeveless top (named for me!), black Gap Always Skinny legging jeans and Oasis Carrie wedges. If you fancy a bit of added height and don’t mind suede, get these boots.  They are one of the most comfortable pairs of boots I own.

I hope I am safe in the assumption that my bro in law doesn’t follow our blog and that I am not ruining the surprise. We have a shared love of macaroons and I took delivery of 34 of these beauties this morning from the rather fabulous Forman and Field.  I’ve filled a box for each of us.  I shall be enjoying mine at frequent intervals and hopefully making his Christmas a happy one too.

Happy partying!

Playing Catch-up

Various (minor) domestic dramas and the continued winter vomiting of Older Daughter made last week not one of my better ones. For various reasons blogging had to take a back seat but I did manage to take some snaps, so here is a potted version of last week’s better moments. (You can tell that they are the better moments as in some of them I even have my coat on and am about to leave the house!)

This was actually today, so not last week at all but I wanted to show you the coat I am wearing because , quite simply it has been an absolute godsend in all this biblical rain we’ve been having.

It’s the Oasis waxed parka with quilted lining. I thought the fur on the hood looked a bit scraggy so I took it off mine (I had to take the buttons it buttons onto the hood with off too as they kept catching in my hair and ripping it out – ouch!). I’m currently wearing it with the quilted inner buttoned in for warmth but I can see it being very useful come warmer weather when I can take it out and use it as a raincoat. Okay, it’s not a performance item like say, a real Barbour would be, but it’s had a real testing in the current weather conditions and it’s pretty damn good at keeping me warm and dry. I recommend.

Underneath the parka this is what I was wearing:

Warehouse studded shoulder jumper

White scallop collar shirt from Asos (I think there’s still 25% off on ASOS with )

Black boa effect leggings by American Apparel (old) but similar here

Ann Klein Bristle boots from Kurt Keiger – now reduced to £75

Snakeskin scarf by Armani Exchange bought in States earlier this year

You can’t really see it in the first photo but the boa leggings have got a really unusual finish, part leather, part wet-look, part glitter. I recently dug them out, having not worn them for at least two years and was reminded by how much better they have worn than the various wet-look leggings I have bought over the same period, all of which have lost their coating after a few washes.

Mid-way through last week my M&S kids faux fur gilet arrived (!!). Now this I ordered after Kat from Does my Bum Look 40 recommended it. I think Gina ordered it too. It was pretty good, about an 8 out of 10 I would say but in the end I sent it back because I already own two (real) fur gilets that I don’t really wear enough, hence me digging out this short brown mongolian fur gilet below.

Mongolian fur gilet from My Wardrobe (old)

Viscose military shirt from Kew (old)

Ponte jodphurs from Kookai (old)

Star knee high boots by Day Birger & Mikkelson (old)

Later on I added the Comptoir/Uniqlo short reversible puffa jacket. Although when I bought it I gave more consideration to the colours of the striped side than the solid colour inside,  I actually hadn’t worn it coloured side outwards until today.

Saturday night, was a well-earned and much looked forward to night out with friends at a wonderful dinnerparty.

Wool flannel and chiffon panelled shirt by Tibi (old)

Pleather leggings from Topshop

Sancho Boots by Pied a Terre available from John Lewis

Leather snakeskin and zip clutch by Urban Code from Asos (sold out).

This clutch was a bargain, reduced to £45 on Asos, and I was absolutely delighted with it when it arrived last week. I think this particular style is sold out now but Asos still has some other Urban Code designs, also heavily reduced. This is the crossbody version of my clutch (hmmm, I may have just ordered this one too…..) and I like this stitch detail clutch.

Sunday, the children stopped being ill, it didn’t rain (well, only a tiny bit!) and the sun actually shone and it was a lovely (if blustery) autumn day so we took everyone out for brunch and then went for a long walk (and cake!) at the local National Trust place.

Long sleeved a-line tee from Uniqlo (now sold out online but may still be instore)

Lambswool cowl neck slouchy jumper from Uniqlo here

Black Rats leggings by Sass & Bide (old)

Lady Jenn Boots by Belstaff (old)

Alexis wants her necklace back

Now as a child/teenager of the 80’s there were few things I enjoyed more on television than Dynasty.  The hair, the clothes and the jewellery – I wanted it all.

So the comeback of big costume jewellery has been very exciting.  I’ve always loved pearls but realise on me they can look rather matronly so tend to just stick to a bracelet.  However I saw this Coast necklace recently and was enamoured especially when worn over a crewneck jumper

I’m wearing it here with the Zara studded coat and Oasis studded jumper.  Yes its a lot of studs but you know its fine – I was up before 5am for the 21st day in a row so I’m just going with it.

I’m also wearing a new lipstick which is much brighter than I usually go for but have been inspired by Rachel to leave the muted plums behind and go red.
