Get your jacket

I like jackets.

I do not like cardigans. I am simply unable to wear them. Just looking at them makes me age a decade. I have tried all the ways I can think of trying them. Belted makes me want to scream; the double whammy of looking like someone’s grandma and feeling like I have put on a straight jacket. “Thrown on” just looks silly. Photos tell me that the chunkier the cardigan the more success I have. Indeed the more jacket like the cardigan. So I tend to just stick to jackets.  Jackets, I can wear. Lucky that.

I’m a big fan of leather jackets and have several; All Saints grey (currently residing with one of my fortunate sisters), pale caramel from Mint Velvet, Massimo Dutti red and black from Zara.

Denim jackets are brilliant. I often use one in the warmer months to “dress down” a frock but the English summer is rarely hot enough to banish jeans and I don’t really like doing double denim. The best I’ve found was from H&M a few years ago though one of my sisters has had good success with a Next one.

Anyway, this is about neither denim nor leather jackets but Other Jackets.  I’m very lucky to have been given this lovely Zara yellow pleather trimmed jacket by Sarah WornOut. It arrived on a very grey day and brightened me up no end. I can be a bit soppy with clothes. I like them even more when I have the thought that a friend gave them to me.

I’m the proud new owner of this ASOS fluro jacket too. It’s quite thin and cardiganesque without being a cardigan.

I will wear it with ripped jeans and a grey tshirt, like this.

ASOS don’t have it on line anymore but they do have some lovely jackets in.  I think these are worthy of further investigation.

And if this ASOS jacket is a good take on this Helmut Lang coat (my favourite jacket of all time), it may have to be mine.

I have got in on the quilted action with this grey quilted biker jacket from Next.  As regular readers will know, Next and I are not the best of buddies.  I adore this jacket though and have wanted to wear it every day I have owned it, even though the weather hasn’t been kind to us yet.

and me in it.

jacket3My final new offering is this black jacket from H&M.  They did this style last year as well and have it in at least five colours.  You can’t see the pattern properly from the main photo, it is a lace print.  I have an orange one from last year – they are very easy to wear.

Finally, I bought this Baukjen Kate silver sequin draped jacket towards the end of last summer (blogged here). I really like it though it didn’t get much wear. I’m going on holiday to the sun soon and am thinking of taking it to wear in the evenings. More holiday talk soon.

Love and friendship

As I mentioned in my last post, I am surrounding myself with love and friendship this week. We met one of my dearest mates and his wife for brunch this morning. It’s his 60th later this year so we had happy things to discuss. We are planning a trip back to Italy together to celebrate his birthday. It was nice to think of happy times and sunshine to come.

I was planning to wear something other than skinnies and a jumper. However I failed dismally at getting my Little Legs to stay in bed and had to get up with her at 5:30am. Both kids woke each other up every hour all night too so I did not feel great this morning. It’s also freezing out. In the end I wore an ancient green Primark roll neck with Baukjen boxy Gemma on top, Zara olive skinny trousers, Ugg Gershwins, Zara parka, Marc by Marc Jabobs scarf, Carhartt bobble hat.

It is very rare that we get both kids to nap together. Today we did and lordy, I needed it. I woke up feeling much better and went out to the pub for Sunday dinner wearing a grey draped shirt from Vero Moda many moons ago (how I would love to find a new version ), grey Zara heeled boots, Marc by Marc Jacobs scarf, black Nudies which I got from a friend a few years ago and my beautiful yellow Zara sunshine jacket from Sarah WornOut. Told you, surrounding myself with love and friendship, even in my clothes.

West End Girls

Up town yesterday. Little legs went to a show then we are took her and some out of town family for dinner.

Had to nip and have my eyelashes redone first thing. They were looking very worse for wear after two weeks.

Here’s the before and after. I think I will have them done twice more then get them removed. They look great for a week but I don’t have the time or money to get them redone every 7 days.

I could not resist wearing these trainers straight away. Baukjen grey boxy Gemma roll neck, Zara jeans, Marc by Marc Jacobs grey bag, Zara studded zebra trainers, Maison Scotch wool star scarf.

Wrap me in sunshine

I need some sun. I need winter to get lost and for the cold weather germs to leave me and my family alone. The sky in London is white. Only the daffodils on my window table are brightening the view. I always have flowers, thank you for flowers.

Anyway, what do you think of this jacket?

I spotted it as soon as the new Baukjen range hit. I love grey and I love yellow, I love biker style jackets; should tick all the boxes.

Well, not quite. This is a 12. I can’t do it up but I’d need a 16 to be able to do that and it would be big everywhere else. I don’t do these types of jacket up anyway so that’s not really an issue for me. (As an aside, I know some people think it’s crazy to have jackets that cannot be done up. It’s the only way I have found that the ample chested get to wear little jackets)

I suppose it’s the yellow I’m not 100% sure about. I wanted buttercup, daffodil, sunshine. This is ochre. If I’m being really picky, I don’t like the dangly bits on the zips either. It may also be a tad more structured than I’d expected. It also has a rather odd square neck. I have a very drapey unstructured jacket in my collection though and maybe this Baukjen number adds the edge I need to my ripped jeans to distinguish myself from my 14 year old sister.

I have looked at others. The offering from Next was quite tempting but we have issues, Next and I. I always find Next clothes aren’t exactly right (even the tie dye jeans I love aren’t perfect – too short and they have a strange waistband) And the yellow jacket is sold out now anyway. The Zara one I did try when it was in store but I decided to skip the boucle jacket wagon and didn’t get it. And well, this Balenciaga leather offering is simply stunning. As is the bag to match. Champagne tastes on a lemonade budget.

Back to the Baukjen Salma. I do like it. The marl is lovely. It feels quality. I have a bad cold and may not be in the best frame of mind to decide. I am moving towards a no. If it can’t cheer me up on a grey day, it is probably not worthy of a place in my wardrobe. What do you think?
