V Thursday

Is it that time of the year again?

Today I am wearing the Danya belted dress from Whistles. This colour (Aubergine I think) is sold out on the Whistles website but the lovely people at Atterley Road have limited stock.

Whistles has now re-stocked the Danya in Navy.

Swoon. Am tempted, as you know Blue is one of my favourite colours, but not without a discount code. March time? Grazia?

Shoes are Nine West Flax black suede stiletto courts.

Nine West gets my vote for a generous size 9 (42) and good reductions can be found online and at House of Fraser.

Navy Blazer/Jacket is Gerard Darel from Ma Boutique and is part of a dress suit.

A little bit of red for V day has come out in this DVF scarf.

My sales mission

Hello! Hope you have all had a lovely Christmas holiday. Ours didn’t go according to plan as our eldest two were struck down by a terrible dose of ‘flu and spent the whole week feeling awful. Poor boys, they couldn’t even play with their new Xbox. Yes, it was that bad! On the mend now though so I am prepping for a re-run of Christmas dinner tomorrow as they missed out on the goodies. By special request I am making Nigella’s Pavlova. Her trick is to turn the meringue over and put the cream on the marshmallowy underside, then top with passionfruit, and we are adding raspberries. I cannot describe how heartstoppingly delicious it is!

There is one element of Christmas that is sacrosanct for me and that is going to the sales. Up until two years ago, we all had a day off in Dublin the 26th, shops were closed and there was nothing to do but relax. It was my favorite day of the year, but then Brown Thomas spoiled it all by moving the sale forward by a day, others copied and that was the end of that. I usually have a goal on sales day, something I’ve spotted and really want, but this year, with all the codes and pre-Christmas sales around, I had already snagged the Whistles Audrey and the Dune gold heels I wanted for ages, so I decided to focus on non skinny trousers, having ranted here a while back that they were so hard to find.

I ended up with three pairs.

The Whistles Sporty Crepe Trouser in navy. I love these and bought them a while back, but returned them as I didn’t think the fabric was worth €160. It’s worth €45 though!

These Selected Femme slouchy trousers are almost identical and were half price. They are too long but that’s easily fixed.

I’m not so sure about the Zara Herringbone trousers though. They are well above my ankle bone, I’ll have to think about them.

I did pick up another couple of things which I’ll blog soon. It occurred to me that with the aforementioned codes and sales, I haven’t paid full price for anything since October. I like shopping that way, let’s see if I can keep it up well into the New Year.

I can’t say that I loved 2012, so I’m looking forward to a happy and stylish year in 2013. I hope that you have one too!

Christmas list

It’s all about me, this list. I have a children’s list too, but this one is pure indulgence (and fantasy sadly!)

I’m a great believer in everyday luxury, I would rather have a beautiful keyring that I use everyday than an amazing party dress which I rarely wear. So the first two items on my Christmas list are very practical!

Valentino lace effect sunglasses I just love these, the combination of the cats eye shape and the lace print is so glamorous

Prada pink wallet I have had my eye on this for a while, the colour is so beautiful, and really is there an item you use more often than your wallet?

You just can’t have a Christmas list without some sparkle and I certainly don’t need the festive season as an excuse to wear glitter or sequins.

I got a great Lancome gold glitter varnish last Christmas, but it’s empty now, so this Butter London  looks like a good replacement

J Crew Flower lattice necklace  I have been pining for this necklace for a while now, I absolutely love it

These Maison Martin Margiela boots are the ultimate ankle boots and the great thing about metallics is they go with everything.

Like Eve, I have been a fan of By Terry’s lip balm for a while now, but the packaging of this Dior balm has turned my head, it is just so pretty!  Dior  rose lip balm

Kiehl’s Creme de Corps is the ultimate body lotion for me, it smells delicious and has such a lovely sheen

Diptyque Baies is the only scented candle I like, a beautiful fragrance the lasts for ages. I had the tragedy of getting the Baies room spray last year, and promptly smashing it on the ceramic tiles. I still wince when I remember it!

Now, you have to have something snuggly on your Christmas list, don’t you? I dream about lounging around all day in these Liberty print pajamas and sheepskin slippers, watching Grace Kelly movies and reading old magazines. As if that’s going to happen.

And no Christmas list from me is complete without some cashmere

I have been lusting after this jumper for a while now and finally nabbed it yesterday (Yes all my best Christmas presents usually come from myself) Get it now from Whistles or House of Fraser with 20% off  Whistles Audrey cashmere jumper

And this is a gorgeous snuggly treat from Eilis Boyle cashmere hat scarf . And look, with all this snow and ice we are forecast, it is an absolute winter essential, no?

And finally, I need a bag on my list. I have been hankering after a red bag for a while. After coming across this vintage Birkin, nothing else will do now. I think I will need a lottery win for this one somehow

Armchair shopping

Whay a day, bucketing rain here, lights on, heating on, slippers and wrist warmers on. What else to do but a bit of online browsing!

Given what I’m wearing this week I have been looking at dresses, but several questions spring to mind as I browse,  among them, why are there so many sleeveless dresses? It is winter! And is there a global shortage of coloured dyes because almost every dress on the high street is black, navy or charcoal? My criteria are long sleeves and non-muddy coloured, and there’s not a lot to choose from. If I was looking for a going out dress I’d be fine, but I want something lovely for everyday that won’t break the bank. If money was no object I would be wearing Carven dresses every day, but sadly it is!

Take the Me & Em site for example. I love their clothes and have a much worn heavy cashmere cardigan from them. But their dress colours are dark – black, navy, charcoal, even when they stray into blues and greens they are muddy and dull. Some of the styles and cuts look great but I just don’t need another dark item in my wardrobe.

I would love this dress in a colour, it looks like a flattering cut, and has pockets which I love in a dress. I could live with the lack of sleeves, and if it was available in a warm colour it would be on it’s way to me.

The same goes for Jigsaw and Whistles, there are some lovely dresses but the colours really let them down. Boden, on the other hand has pretty good selection, avoiding the fun prints of course.

Another place I love to browse is the Matches site, and their Style Steals section has some great Diane Von Furstenberg dresses with great reductions. I love this drapey cobalt one. Thermal underneath and blazer on top would insulate you,

and this Anglomania. The sizes are limited, but they might fit you, I hope so!

This morning, before it started to pour, I was wearing this DVF  Adeline dress which was a winter sale purchase from last year, but I fear I am ruining the look with my slippers and cardigan, so I think an outfit change may be in order.
